Santo Andre.   Each September Chelmarsh R.G. travels to the west coast of Portugal, 22 km above Sines, to Santo Andre Nature Reserve. The reserve consists of a series of freshwater lakes separated from the sea by sand dunes. Reedbeds and willows in the lagoon zones contain hosts of migratory birds, and a ringing station is operated throughout August/September.

News from 2008 visit to Santo Andre.

Dave F, Dave B, and Joe, have just returned from another successful week.  Over 500 birds ringed, and an amazing species list.  Top of the list was 2 Pectoral Sandpipers trapped together in one net.  These birds breed in Siberia, and regions of Alaska and Northern Canada. The wintering range is largely restricted to South America.  Records from europe typically come from late August to mid-October. These vagrants are believed to originate from birds undertaking a southeasterly movement across Canada, which then overshoot the Canadian coastline and become caught in Atlantic depressions or in the jet-stream. (info taken from The Migration Atlas of the BTO.)

This picture of the tail shows tail feathers 4, 5, and 6, the same length. This is one of the diagnostic characteristics separating this bird from the Sharp Tailed Sandpiper which is very similar.
