2011   (Numbers of some species will increase slightly as some C ringers have still to submit ringing records for October) Overall totals are already on a par with 2010, with almost 2 months of the year remaining. Some interesting facts have been revealed about several of the species ringed at Chelmarsh which are worthy of note here. LAPWING:    2 broods of chicks were ringed on the 'scrape' thus confirming breeding. Nationally, this species is in decline due largely to changes in farming practices. Chelmarsh Reserve has the habitat to encourage breeding. All birds from these 2 broods survived to flying juveniles. SAND MARTIN:     These birds use the Phragmites Reedbeds at Chelmarsh as a resting place during Spring and Autumn migration. A change in ringing tactics led to a considerable increase in numbers ringed. Normally, we have targeted the Autumn migration as birds prepare to fly South to Africa. This year, for the first time, we caught the birds as they headed North to their various breeding grounds in the UK. This tactic has confirmed that birds from the North of the UK use Chelmarsh as an important stopover. L161952 ringed 17/06/2010 at Kirkby Lonsdale, Lancashire caught at Chelmarsh 07/04/2011 L066487 ringed 08/08/2010 at Angus, Nr. Dundee caught at Chelmarsh 03/04/2011 X908235 ringed 22/08/2009 at Wakefield, West Yorkshire caught at Chelmarsh 27/03/2011 X185073 ringed 25/06/2010 at Westwick, North Yorkshire caught at Chelmarsh 27/03/2011  One interesting outward bound bird X269048 ringed at Chelmarsh on 12/07/2008 was retrapped just 17 days later, passing down the West coast of France at Morbihan (505km). PIED WAGTAIL:   Numbers using the reedbeds in late summer increased considerably, reflected in numbers ringed. WARBLERS:   A mixed message. SEDGE and REED maintaining similar numbers, WHITETHROAT and BLACKCAP increasing, while GARDEN and LESSER WHITETHROAT virtually absent. CHIFFCHAFF outnumbering WILLOW WARBLER six to one, when pre 2005 Willow Warbler were more abundant than Chiffchaff. These variations in warbler numbers are thought to be due to differences in the areas the birds spend the winter. An investigation is being carried out by the BTO (Out of Africa) to try to understand more about these birds, and how to ensure conservation measures are put in place to prevent serious declines.
